The round-up

We worked through some specific feedback-related issues last week:

What do you do when you’re not getting any feedback yourself?

  • leaders rarely receive feedback themselves, as they are often the ones who dish it out. so you have to get out there and ask! specifically!

  • always scope your ask, so people know what to focus on:

    • do you want feedback on the content? or the delivery?

    • do you want feedback on your position? or how to position?

    • do you need their direction or confirmation of your direction?

How do you “neutralize” feedback when the norm is feedback = something negative?

  • positive reinforcement matters as much as critique

  • use the feedback formula of behavior + impact + intention to invite a neutral conversation:

    • behavior alone: “you were aggressive in that meeting”

    • behavior + impact: “when you cut Ashley off a few times, I noticed she shut down for the rest of the call”

    • behavior + impact + intent: “cutting Ashley off a few times unintentionally came off as dismissive, and she shut down for the rest of the call”

What are some ways to sprinkle in feedback on a regular basis, so you’re not rehashing something from months ago on a performance review?

  • where possible, create development “themes” within close working relationships, so you can tie a small observation (good or bad) to that theme on an ongoing basis

  • offer to “post-game” a meeting/deliverable over slack for some quick thoughts

  • use self-disclosure: proactively naming your own development areas makes it easier for others to give feedback on their own without you asking (and allows others to follow this practice)
