The round-up
Last week, we talked about networking anxiety and outreach discomfort:
Did you know that everyone self-reported feelings of imposter syndrome when reaching out to people, especially people they know?
(including me! and I reach out to you all every week!)
After a quick consensus that this mindset was indeed head trash, we learned about a framework for evaluating rational thoughts:
is this thought based on verifiable fact?
is it in my best interest?
does it get me what I want and need?
does it protect and prolong my life?
Some good tactics for reaching out, even when its uncomfortable:
name your goal in the reach out (“one of my new year’s resolutions is to keep in contact with my network more”)
“give before you ask” in ways that provide the person with value before making a request
people naturally like to help, be considered an expert and give their opinion, so consider those as “asks” when you are reaching out
