The round-up
Turns out the answer to both personnel situations from last week is “work with how the person is wired instead of trying to rewire them.” Dare I say that was… a lightbulb moment?
Ex #1: Someone who manufactures urgency and positions themselves as the one who fixes it
rescuing/heroics often get praised at work, which can feel like job security, which… gestures vaguely at the state of corporate
lean into the savior complex but minimize the impact
“let’s work on this together and then get the team involved”
give them a real fire to own
have a standing “what are you worried about?” portion of your 1:1s where they can get it out of their system
Ex #2: Someone who has a lot of ideas and a tendency to overpromise, resulting in missed deadlines and operational drag
give the rabbit hole/shiny object itch somewhere to live: could be inviting them to a brainstorm or holding a biweekly ideation session
pair them with someone who is all about execution
track their say/do ratio, which can give them a dopamine hit for saying no or hitting a deadline
